The first thing I thought about after reading these two quotes is that verse in James that talks about Faith and Work and Justification...I have heard a lot of speakers use that phrase to explain similar thoughts to these quotes, that without action what you believe is weightless.
I was reading something about this chapter that explains that James writes that Faith and Works are both justification of ones faith. But not Faith WITH Works...Faith and Works are two seperate types of justification. Faith is justification before God, Works is justification before men.
One's salvation is not established or validated by their work, nor is it invalid by their lack of work. One is justified by their faith in God and if you take the theme of the rest of James it seems to say that we ought to live like Christians...not just because it's what God would want, but because we are justified before men.
I think this is probably a good time to stop. I'm going to let that marinate and I might change slash add something later.

hi i did a search for peter bradley adams and came across your blog. i like this post. it makes me think of James 1 and how people can either be hearers or doers. thanks for putting it up!
